2022 AO3 wrapped [extended]

It's getting dusty in here... I started this thread on twt but let me finish the whole thing here, and expand a bit more.

Before anything else, funny thing, I found my tweet where I listed my 2022 goals and I really said, my writing goals for 2022 is just 3 things:

2022 writing goals:

- write more fics in filipino
- finish my youth of may au aka not drop out from redacted fest......
- collab w someone

+ tentatively: coupzi manifesto (if I find the courage and the heart) ((I WILL))

in a nutshell, I did:

— write MORE fics in filipino: I wrote four fics in filipino!
— I also did finish my youth of may/no happy ending fest entry, and its the longest fic I have this year!
— I also did finish my coupzi fic, which was my scoups bday fic!

...so that's everything except the collab!! Not bad. Good job, Kit. You actually even got more done!

Check this out.

My yearly word count: this year was a record breaking 97,577 words! Funny now, looking back, how I really started the year saying I just have three things I wanted to do haha... I wrote NINE fics this year. :)

My favorite fic this year: a portrait of you with my eyes closed

“Did you know at the station, Jihoon thought I looked like someone he knew?” Jeonghan passes around a plastic cup, filled with the liquor. First to Seokmin, who he’s facing as he says this. And then to Jihoon, he locks eyes with as he waits for Jihoon to give his hand out, for him to place the guitar down on his lap.

Seokmin drinks from the cup. “Oh, did he?” he’s smiling. “What does he look like? This one that you love?”

Jihoon looks up. Ah.

I have a very soft spot for this fic, not just because I'm a couprang, but mostly because writing it allowed me to try out this idea I've had for a really long time, which I always do in my fiction outside of RPF but I can't seem to pull off in fan fiction: to use the first person pov. This fic slips into that kind of narrative voice a bit sometimes, and rereading it today, I'm surprised to realize it does work like this!

I also love this a lot because it was inspired by so many stories I love: the movie Little Forest, this poem by Cole Swensen I saw as an epigraph to a different work by a local artist I admire, and the short story HOMECOMING IS JUST ANOTHER WORD FOR THE SUBLIMATION OF THE SELF. And also, it got me one of my most favorite comments of the year: I can tell by the story that you love Seungcheol dearly.

Honorable mention for Confessions (feat. WOOZI) which was a first time for me, writing and posting a formatted fic. This was a fun experiment on style, pov, and intertextuality that I enjoyed so much, and my friend also made a really cute art to post it with!

My favorite reads this year: unfortunately didn't get to read AS MUCH this year, but some special mentions for these stories I enjoyed--

My wish for next year is to read more, be more thoughtful about reading, as in commenting/making conversations about read fics, and reaching out to writers whose works made me feel something. Please anticipate me in your dms/inboxes soon: hi, I felt this hard.

My favorite ship + favorite character to write: Seungkwan! My wonboo fic is probably my most fun story this year, as in the one I had the most fun writing and also the one most readers had the biggest fun reading and yelling about. Haha it would be obnoxious of me to attach screenshots of users on Twitter screaming about this fic, but there were so many the week the fic was posted... it was so cute. I've never experienced that in my other fics before! I was just sitting there, laughing to myself, like wow I broke these people...

Also, writing Seungkwan was my biggest revelation this year. Which is wild, because his character was the first pov I tried writing ever. My first ever fic on AO3 was a verkwan one, so that's! Wow! Though to be honest, I think it's mostly also because of the new friends I got who were very loving boosadans. It's a loop of love and knowing.

My favorite lines: I'll be very indulgent here and share more than one--

that's a filthy one..

How would you feel if Jeonghan meets someone new in the house?

Joshua frowns like he’s tortured. “I would hate it. I would hate it a lot.”

Jeonghan closes his eyes.

When pain and longing simultaneously fills the heart, it’s almost a pure sensation. It cuts at the throat. It doubles back and almost blinds you. It spins downwards into an infinite feeling of loss so real it transforms into a desire to hold whatever you can find to love as close as you can to yourself before it’s pulled away.

Take care of yourself.

that's a sad one...

When I think of Seungcheol, I think of time.

a portrait of you with my eyes closed

“Pero eto, walang halong biro. Seungkwan, mula nung makilala kita, parang gusto kong…”

sorry! i don't love you!

yeah, those were cheesy lines...

He quietly steps outside for a moment and glances up. Above them, two choppers lazily circle the area.

Chanyeol braves it and goes out to the street. A terrible silence has descended the city. The smoke clings upon the sky like an awful fog and the sun is a dim orange ball far away in the kingdom of God.

From where he’s standing, he spots down the road a bus being stopped by a squad to check the passengers. He hears it loud and clear when one of the soldiers shout, “we’ll kill every bastard here in Gwangju!”

SPRING OF RADIANT SORROW

and ah, that one. A heavy, difficult one. But I think is one of the most cinematic lines I've pulled out of my head this year.

WIP I finally finished:
Instead of talking about the one I just finished yesterday (to be posted for a fest next Feb? March?), maybe I should say SPRING OF RADIANT SORROW instead. I think this was my grandest project yet, because it's so heavily researched and structured around actual events in SoKor's democratic history, that I largely felt I was in over my head writing it. And it's for a No Happy Ending fest to add, which already is the ending, and since it's historical, then we know how it ends, but it was sooooooooo challenging to write.

I honestly didn't feel happy or relieved when I finished it, not that it wasn't something I was proud of or whatever, but just coming to its end, I realize once again how harrowing all of it is. I wrote an extended a/n to this fic here. I think this story is the closest to the stuff I write irl and outside of fan spaces, so that's also quite revelatory.

WIPS I've yet to finish: this is for next year no? I have a chaptered actor/manager au, the result of me watching like, three dramas with the same premise, all of which I ended up dropping. So, this WIP is me fixing these shows I've seen and writing it the way I want it basically.

And there's another one I started as a bingo fill, but since posting for the bingo fest ends next year's March I think, and I'm not sure if I'll finish it by then, I might just post it in the latter half of next year when I'm done with the actor/manager fic. Dunno, but this bingo fic is so squirmy in my brain rn I think I need to set down the details asap. It's for a big-ish pairing that a lot of friends/adjacent-friends (?) yap about online... but their dynamics in this WIP in my head is quite different from everyone's take on them so that's also kinda scary. Still, I'll work on this next year.

My most read fic this year: sambahin ang katawan

OK, I think it needs to be said, this is my most important achievement this year.

And not just because of its stats (and not to minimize it, but for a fic in a non-Eng language, I think its numbers are really impressive), but because of readers saying reading this made them realize maganda pala ang smut sa Filipino. And GUUUUUYS, hello! It really is! A lot were super astounded by this, but I think it's less about the quality of my writing, but more about the quantity of the good quality works in Filipino readers in general have access with. There's so many writings in our language out there na talagang maganda, hindi lang siya madaling mahanap o nababasa. Which is, you know, not the fault of the reader. I keep thinking nga, whenever I get qrts/comments about this saying it's the best thing they read in Filipino na, huy hala, marami pa diyan! Mas lalong magaganda pa!

My longest fic this year:
SPRING OF RADIANT SORROW, 27500 words

My shortest fic this year: The Thing Is, 1000 words

My favorite fic title I used:
you know, I love all my titles actually. But most of them are inspired/lifted off existing materials (sambahin ang katawan is from a novel of the same title, sorry! i don't love you! is from a dialogue off the movie it's based off, SPRING OF RADIANT SORROW is from a poem, Take care of yourself. is from Sophie Calle, etc...) so favorite from this year that's all mine is: siguro/sana. Fit the fic perfectly, and also feels so original and unique! :)

My favorite comment this year:
I got so many kind comments this year. AO3 says this year, I got 133 comment threads T____T

All the comments in sambahin ang katawan were so crazy to me, I don't think I was ever really this crazily praised before, but I have to shoutout pat's comment: PUTANGINA NASAN YUNG [REDACTED AWARD GIVING BODY] NITO?????? And like, hahaha I love this so much because the idea of this fic being read and then awarded by the this institution is actually hilarious. And plausible. If you know you know.

And of course, the one for the scoups bday fic that simply said author, you love scoups so much are u ok. paraphrased badly... thank you...

My total fics/chapters uploaded this year:
a whopping 9!

I'm looking forward to next year: joining eng fests again? I deliberately took a step back in joining any this year, but I signed up for one next year so that's something I'm looking forward to. Also, I know it's only December but I'm already looking forward to my next scoups bday fic. I have the plot already in my head lol ^__^

And since I didn't get to do any collab this year, I think I'm up to that still next year.

I'm on a fic writing ban starting today until... I get my revisions for my book done so hopefully, after February, I can start the gears running for my 2023 goals! But I'm doing the justcommentfest thing haha, so I'm very excited to go through my read fics and get to writing comments later.

Speaking of, here are some vague 2023 writing goals:

- post and finish a chaptered/ongoing fic
- scoups bday fic
- outsider pov fic... hmm.
- collab with someone [applications open]
- be more thoughtful in reading and commenting :)
- care less about what others are doing and just... do stuff that makes me happy!
-  oh, this is a shot in the dark, but run a gift exchange fest with friends/local writers!!!

And that's it! Happy end of the year, friend!
